I teach Photoshop at the College level. I have been using Studio Techniques for several Photoshop versions over the years – and my students LOVE Ben. They love the way he explains complicated stuff in easy-to-grasp terms.
They LOVE his images to practice on.
Well, when CS4 version of Studio Techniques came out, I bought it and planned to use it in my intermediate photoshop class in the Fall…Then I got the book and found that there was no CD. The CD was one of the BEST things about his lessons: interesting images to practice on, and lots of them. It was fun to compare your results with his examples. And the teaching style in this version of the book has changed to a lot more “dry” approach.
I am not pleased. I will be looking for a more user-friendly-yet-sophisticated Photoshop book. One with pictures to practice on.

As a 1st time user of Photoshop (CS4 Extended) I purchased this book to teach me how to use the app. It’s the textbook for a Digital Photog class I’m taking. What a mistake! This book is geared to folks who have been using Photoshop for many years and just need to know what differs in CS4 from previous versions of the S/W.
For instance, the author talks about capabilities like the ‘Arrange Docs icon’ or ‘Screen Mode pop-up menu’ and doesn’t even show images of what those things are (in Chap. 1!); so it’s tough for a newbie to find the features without time-consuming searching around.
The author keeps throwing in phrases like, “you’re probably used to working in this mode…” No, I’m not. I’m a beginner and have no clue how it’s supposed to work. That’s why I bought your expensive book.
I’d have preferred the author just write a clear, straightforward book about how to use CS4 and include a whole separate chapter on features/functions that differ from CS3 (or other earlier versions).
If you are an expert Photoshop user and like this approach of every sentence of every chapter in the book comparing one version to another then, pax Nabisco – you’ll love the style employed.
If you are a photographer just coming up to speed on digitally enhancing or post-processing images and are new to Photoshop and CS4, find another book as your intro or you’ll be tearing your hair out. If I wasn’t required to use this book for a class, it would be winging its way back to Amazon. Big disappointment.

Not sure what either Peachpit or Wilmore/Ablan were thinking. They released this newest edition without any of the images used in the book! No link to any site to even download the images. What on this earth were these people thinking? I get the feeling that Mr. Willmore’s name is on here for the sake of the book and he had no involvement in this title. No way to interact with Mr. Ablan his website is eye candy only. What is even more incredible is that in the introduction to this book there is an entry… “What’s Missing?” and under the heading here is the exact wording… and I quote. “This book doesn’t come with a CD” all they go on to say is there is more than they could included on the number of pages for this book and they send you to Mr. Ablan’s website for videos! More examples of ways to use PS CS4 but no way to follow along using the same images. Avoid this edition. Maybe Mr. Willmore will come back for the next issue. If not… find something else. If my bookstore allowed returns I would take this back today! Can you spell S-U-C-K-E-R!

I read Ben’s Cs3 book loved it. But this Cs4 version is very different. This books has similar content but is kind of difficult to read. It started out fine as a easy read, just like Ben’s CS3 book..and then it became just not pleasant to read. I gave up after the chapter on layers and curves…it must be the most horrible way to explain curve…..Sometimes the picture does not even match the text…
Look elsewhere. Buy Martin Evening’s book instead. That is an awesome book.
